Had quite the experience today, took my friends from Europe to the gun range. With guns being something, I grew up around with my family always owning guns, hunting with guns, and recreationally using guns, them never even seeing guns in real life was bizarre. Their experience with guns only went as far as seeing guns in movies or shows, but never holding or interacting with one. For me interacting with guns taught me a certain respect that comes with holding a gun and potentially someone's life on the other end of that gun. But they'd never experienced that feeling, and obviously coming to America that what was the one thing they wanted to do? Shoot a gun. So, we go to the range and of course they're picking out their favorite gun from a video game or movie to shoot, just thinking it'll be like they've seen in media. However, I could see the nerves in their face and in the trembling hands as they prepared to handle their first firearm. After getting instruction and procedure from the instructor, he grabbed the gun and instantly the nerves showed through him, the laser sight shaking and darting all over the target. The first shot rung out and I didn't even see a hole on the target. He missed, he was so scared he flinched and missed the target! He said he didn't realize until that moment that he was potentially holding the life of another person in his hands. Obviously, we were in an extremely safe environment with all the proper precautions but still it was interesting to see the realization from him seeing guns in a fictional fantasy that in the moment he finally understood that these aren't toys and his carefree attitude towards them became serious and he focused on seeing them not as movie props, but the serious instruments they are.
